Poetic Roar (October 2012 - May 2013)
For my final year project at university I set up my own audio production company. The premise of the project was to provide Birmingham's local creative arts community an online promotion opportunity. I worked with two clients, The Old Joint Stock Theatre and Acting Out. Both were local theatre companies in Birmingham. I made three different podcasts for each client.
Acting Out, an LGTB drama group, wanted an introduction podcast, and then podcasts leading up to an up-coming performance. I was given the opportunity to work with all of members of the group and establish exactly what they wanted from the podcasts. I ensured that I worked alongside the Acting Out committee members during the editing process in order to ensure that they were being represented accurately and how they wanted.
The Acting Out podcasts followed a narrative, whereas The Old Joint Stock Theatre wanted a different podcast each time, one for each of their events. I worked closely towards briefs and my podcasts where used on The Old Joint Stock Theatres blog, twitter account and email newsletters.
This company gave me the opportunity to develop my audio editing skills and the use of external recording equipment. I was able to interview various different people and work towards client briefs. I was also responsible to market and audience research before starting the project, and managed the Poetic Roars Twitter account.
The finished podcasts can be found on the Poetic Roar's SoundCloud page here.
Active Radio (January 2013)
Active was a two week online radio station that was set up and ran entirely by a group of local students. I was the breakfast producer was required to manage two presents, research content for the shows, conduct audience research and work towards tight deadlines and a fast-paced environment.
I also managed the stations Twitter page whilst on air, and ensured a brand identity was consistent throughout. I wrote scripts for each show and worked closely with the presenters and the station managers.
Kerrang! Radio (July 2011 - May 2013)
I worked freelance for Kerrang! Radio as a roadie. I secured this job by my persistence and enthusiasm for the brand. I applied various times, and formed a professional relationship with the recruitment manager. My job varied with each shift. I performed office tasks, but also promoted the Kerrang! brand at local events around Birmingham. I was required to take photographs at in-studio performances and introduce clients.
This job required me to have a lot of confidence as I would often be promoting the brand around Birmingham City Centre and generating a buzz and speaking to members of the public. I was also required to have strong group work skills, which I developed further at this job. I am a real peoples person, so I excelled when working in groups. This role also gave me the opportunity to gain radio industry contacts and an insight into how a commercial radio station is run and structured.
Scratch Radio (May 2011 - February 2012)
I went through a training scheme with Scratch and was taught how to use the radio software, the technical board and also the rules, regulations and standards which they associate with. After training I was given the opportunity to start presenting my own shows. I have experience in both day-time programming and evening programming. The music choices and style for each of these different slots where completely different, so it was fun for me to adapt my style and music choices for each.
I was given the opportunity to research my own content for the show, work with a co-presenter, create scripts and to establish an audience for the show. Scratch taught me industry skills and gave me the opportunity to present, produce and create my own show.
University Projects
During my time at university, I was involved in creating mock-up radio advertisements. I was involved with script writing, copywriting and recording and editing audio. I was also involved with a couple of radio documentaries including a look at Birmingham club bouncers and geek culture in Birmingham. All can be found here.
